Michigan Civil Rights Initiative
On November 7, 2006, the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (Proposal
2) was passed, which will end affirmative action in state contracting,
education, and employment later this year.
For the health professions, affirmative action programs provide
an important diversity-building strategy that creates access to
education and quality care for everyone. HPD has been working with
the Leadership
Conference on Civil Rights, which briefed HPD members this past
May on this ballot initiative. HPD also has:
- sponsored a sign-on letter from state leaders in health professions education to the citizens of Michigan, and
- produced a fact sheet about the potential effects of the MCRI.
Please feel free to share this information with your colleagues
in Michigan.
HPD will continue its efforts to support diversity initiatives.
