About HPD
The lack of diversity in the nation's health-care workforce has
been a longstanding concern for health professionals. Promoting diversity in
the health-care workforce not only serves as a strategy for addressing the growing
problem of health-care disparities, it also contributes to improved health for
all Americans.
In
response to anti-affirmative action initiatives in the mid 1990s,
several health professions organizations decided to collaborate
and educate the public on the importance of diversity programs for
the health professions. This collaboration was formalized to create
the Health Professions for Diversity (HPD) coalition, a broad-based,
health focused group of organizations that support diversity initiatives,
such as affirmative action. Since then, HPD continues its efforts
to promote diversity in the health professions.
